Curious about tango but nervous about steps? Try this tonight: stand chest to chest in a soft close embrace, share a steady axis, and walk eight slow counts, letting the lead come from the sternum while the follower lands whole foot to whole foot. I’m posting because la caminata builds true couple coordination faster than any pattern — if you try it, tell me where you felt the weight change.
I get better connection when I push the floor back with my standing leg and let my chest arrive a hair before the foot, so the follower feels the travel from the ‘sternum’ not the toe. On sticky floors I soften the knee and roll through to almost-flat so the follower can still land ‘whole foot to whole foot’ without getting yanked.
And i add a micro-pause on every second step and a tiny exhale to keep the sternum intent without shoving — like carrying a full cup of coffee so the embrace doesn’t slosh. I also let my knees brush and roll through the step for a continuous glide; curious whether you prefer chest early or together with hips, @dan_folkdance.
Try a tiny V-shape offset — your right foot slightly outside their left — and keep your hips level like balancing a book so the legs pass clean without steering from the shoulders… That offset makes the ‘steady axis’ easier, but if it feels crowded, run the same eight counts in open hold with just forearm contact to check that your timing still reads as clear intent.
