Finding the balance between technique and artistry

As dancers, we often focus so much on technical precision that we forget the importance of artistic expression. I recently revisited some old choreography and realized how much more captivating it felt when I allowed myself to connect emotionally with the movement. How do you strike that balance in your practice?

It’s all about finding that sweet spot, like making sure your coffee’s not too strong or too weak. Maybe try setting aside time to just dance freely without worrying about technique — what age did you find your artistry really started to shine?

I totally get what you mean about connecting emotionally with your movement — when I revisit old choreography, I try to spend a few minutes just feeling the music without focusing on the steps. It makes a big difference in how I express the piece. Have you ever thought about incorporating improvisation as a warm-up?

I’ve felt that frustration too, especially when revisiting choreography. Setting aside time just to feel the music, like you mentioned, can really help. I sometimes use a journal to jot down my emotions during practice — it helps me connect deeper.
